Kent Wine and Art Fest – July 24, 2010

The 4th Annual Kent Masterpieces on Main Art & Wine Festival presented by Main Street Kent was canceled because of horrible weather on June 5th.

To many people’s satisfaction, the event has been rescheduled. The rescheduled event, called Art & Wine REWIND, will take place on Saturday July 24th, 2010 from Noon – 10 p.m. There will still be wine tasting, shopping, great food and jammin’ music. Wine tasting is $10 and includes a commemorative wine glass and five wine sample tickets.

North Water Street will be closed from Main Street to Columbus. There are six wineries, four musical acts, local artists, local food and downtown favorites that will be featured at the festival. The Blues Festival is also taking place in downtown Kent the same weekend.

The previous six local wineries will return to feature tasting of some of their vintage wines. Wineries include: Candlelight Winery, LaPorte Winery, Myrddin Winery, The Winery at Wolf Creek, Troutman Vineyards and Viking Vineyards.

Musical acts will be playing two hour shows starting at 2 p.m. until the event’s finish. They include (respectively): Brad & Peggy, Steve Vanderink, Bluestones and Mahajibee Blues.

Event sponsors include: The Burbick Foundation, McKay Bricker Framing and Home Savings Bank.

Main Street 101 in 2010

What is Main Street 101? It’s a one-day introduction to the Four-Point Approach to downtown revitalization. Learn how the concepts of Design, Economic Restructuring, Organization, and Promotion mesh to form the Main Street program. Main Street 101 is open to everyone, and at just $15, attending 101 is a great bargain.

Heritage Ohio’s new manager training in Columbus

Earlier today we held our new manager training at our office in Columbus. These trainings, usually held a couple times each year, give us the chance to bring new program staff up to speed on what to expect as they enter the world of downtown revitalization. Today’s training brought staff from Main Street programs in Bellefontaine, Canal Winchester, Defiance, Lebanon, Millersburg, Springfield, and Troy.

Main Street Lancaster seeks Director

The Downtown Lancaster Special Improvement District and Main Street Lancaster organizations are accepting applications for the position of executive director. The director will be responsible for coordinating revitalization and economic development activities through the Main Street program and management of the Special Improvement District in downtown Lancaster, Ohio. Applicants should have education and/or professional experience in one or more of the following areas; historic preservation, planning, economic development, retailing, marketing, design, volunteer management, nonprofit management and small business development. The director must be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, well organized and capable of functioning effectively in an independent environment while connecting with business and property owners and community partners. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The salary range is $30,000 to $45,000 dependent on experience. A Different Approach to Downtown Parking

Main Street Newnan, Georgia is rewarding downtown employees that park in public lots thereby freeing up the best parking spaces for customers and visitors. Maybe an incentive approach might finally help address this perpetual Main Street problem.

The restaurant recently opened in downtown Bellefontaine in a renovated warehouse. The liquor license was possible through the new revitalization district liquor permit legislation. The restaurant’s owner is committed to community involvement, environmental protection, purchasing local and employing and training the developmentally disable. This is a great success story and embodies so much of the spirit and thinking that Ohio cities and towns must embrace. Heritage Ohio is happy to announce that we have received a $99,000 grant from the USDA to provide technical assistance to business people in targeted rural communities. Our program “Retail is Detail” provides market analysis and individual business recommendations to participants to fine-tune their strategy for succeeding in bringing more more jobs and business to Ohio’s rural communities.
