Highlights from the National Preservation Conference
 |
Heritage Ohio's staff traveled to Pittsburgh, PA for the National Preservation Conference October 31-November 5th.
At the Statewide Partners Reception, the staff dressed in various costumes for a Halloween Party. The theme of the event was to dress like your favorite figure from Ohio.
From the left: Joyce Barrett as Phyllis Diller (Lima), Curtis Burris as John Glenn (New Concord), Pauline Eaton as Judith Resnick (Akron) and Brooke Pawlak as Doris Day (Cincinnati).
Besides attending costume parties, the staff spent time learning more about top issues affecting preservation today. One of the key issues discussed was the concept of framing the message of preservation.
A session that highlighted this idea was entitled, "From Nicety to Necessity: Building Public Will for Preservation." The problem posed is that preservation is viewed by many Americans as a nicety, rather than a necessity. The suggested solution is to reframe preservation as a priority need that makes individuals, organizations and communities stronger. The strategies to reach a solution include building audience understanding, values identification, message framing and integrated outreach.
Heritage Ohio will announce the newest communities joining the Ohio Main Street Program at a ceremony to be held in the Statehouse Atrium on Thursday, December 14.
These new Ohio Main Street Programs will join an elite group of communities dedicated to a comprehensive revitalization strategy that has proven to be highly successful around Ohio and the Nation.
Heritage Ohio's Main Street programs receive intensive training and technical support to restore their central business districts to centers of community activity and commerce.
