Heritage Ohio 2012 Annual Awards Call for Nominations

It’s time to honor the people, places and projects that exemplify Heritage Ohio’s commitment to growth through preservation and revitalization. Award nominations are due no later than March 30, 2012, for projects completed by December 31, 2011. Please help us by submitting your nominations for the following categories:

BEST MIXED USE

This award is presented to an individual or business completing a building rehabilitation that serves multiple uses (residential, commercial, office, etc, within a single building).

If completing a Best Mixed Use nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the rehabilitation project including building location and size, building history, former building uses, current building uses, project costs, funding sources, contractor/architect partnership, etc
  • Explain the historical significance of the property and note if it is listed in any national, state or local register or inventory
  • Make note if tax credits were used on the project
  • Describe the work completed including any design assistance sources, financial incentives and project challenges
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST COMMERCIAL REHABILITATION

This award is presented to one or more individuals, tenants or building owners who have completed the best storefront, interior and/or total building improvement project based on proper preservation techniques.

If completing a Best Commercial Rehabilitation nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the rehabilitation project including building location and size, building history, former building uses, project costs, funding sources, contractor/architect partnership, etc
  • Explain the historical significance of the property and note if it is listed in any national, state or local register or inventory
  • Make note if tax credits were used on the project
  • Describe the work completed including any design assistance sources, financial incentives and project challenges
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST RESIDENTIAL REHABILITATION

This award is presented to one or more individuals, tenants or homeowners who have completed the best exterior and/or interior single or multi-family residential project based on proper preservation techniques.

If completing a Best Residential Rehabilitation nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Describe the rehabilitation project including the location, design principles, design assistance used, costs, funding sources, financial incentives used, contractor/architect partnership, etc
  • Detailed description of the work completed throughout the rehabilitation process including project challenges encountered and resolved
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST INFILL

This award is presented to an individual or business completing a new construction project within a historic district.

If completing a Best Infill nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the new construction, including building location and size, project context within the district, project costs, funding sources, contractor/architect partnership, etc
  • Describe the work completed including any design assistance sources, financial incentives and project challenges
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP

This award is presented to an organization and/or municipality that has partnered and leveraged resources to complete a project with a positive, lasting impact in the community, with priority given to preservation-based projects.

If completing a Best Public/Private Partnership, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the project including location and size, history, former uses, project costs, funding sources, planner, contractor/architect partnership, etc
  • Explain the historical significance of the property and note if it is listed in any national, state or local register or inventory
  • Make note if tax credits were used on the project
  • Describe the work completed including any design assistance sources, financial incentives and project challenges
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST DOWNTOWN BEAUTIFICATION

This award is presented to an organization and/or municipality actively engaged in efforts to enhance their downtown’s appearance through a program of streetscape improvements.

If completing a Best Downtown Beautification nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the beautification project including reasoning behind implementation, project costs, funding sources, etc
  • Explain the historical significance of the property and note if it is listed in any national, state or local register or inventory
  • Describe the work completed including any design assistance sources, financial incentives, project challenges, and innovative approaches to overcoming project obstacles
  • Images of the project, especially highlighting before and after conditions

BEST MARKETING/PROMOTION COMMITTEE PROJECT OR EVENT

This award is presented to the committee displaying excellence in Marketing activities (district marketing strategy, brand planning, brand implementation, special event, etc).

If completing a Best Marketing/Promotion Committee Project or Event nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of how the event or project fulfilled an unmet need in the community
  • Describe how the event or project positively impacted the community through event activities, increased attendance, etc
  • Provide information about the cost funding sources, and the production process
  • Images of the event and samples of the promotional materials

BEST BUSINESS ENHANCEMENT/ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING COMMITTEE PROJECT

This award is presented to the committee displaying excellence in Business Enhancement activities (business retention, business recruitment, entrepreneur retention/recruitment, etc).

If completing a Best Business Enhancement/Economic Restructuring Committee Project nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of how the event or project fulfilled an unmet need in the community
  • Describe how the event or project positively impacted the community through event activities, increased attendance, etc
  • Provide information about the cost funding sources, and the production process
  • Images of the event and samples of the promotional materials

BEST OPERATIONS/ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE PROJECT

This award is presented to the committee displaying excellence in Operations activities (innovative communications initiative, social networking/mobile app development, volunteer recruitment, excellence in fundraising)

If completing a Best Operations/Organization Committee Project nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the project to raise money, increase awareness, build a volunteer base, etc
  • Description of the project’s target/goal and the project’s outcome
  • Images of the project efforts in action

BEST DESIGN COMMITTEE PROJECT OR EVENT

This award is presented to the committee displaying excellence in Design activities (design education initiative, incentive development, preservation month activity)

If completing a Best Design Committee Project or Event nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the project or event met a community need
  • Description of the project’s target/goal and the project’s outcome
  • Images of the event/samples of materials produced

MAIN STREET BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

This award is presented to the owner(s) and/or employee(s) of a Main Street program business with innovative strategies.

If nominating a Main Street Business, please provide these support materials:

  • Detailed description of the business’ history with the local Main Street Program, examples of its involvement at the local level and its dedication to revitalization and preservation
  • Images of the nominee in action

MAIN STREET MANAGER OF THE YEAR

This award is presented to a Main Street Manager contributing exceptional efforts to downtown revitalization.

If nominating a Manager, please provide these support materials:

  • Detailed description of the person’s tenure as main street manager, his/her involvement as the Main Street Manager and his/her commitment to revitalization and preservation
  • Images of the nominee in action

SPIRIT OF MAIN STREET

This award is presented to an individual, organization, or business dedicating their time and effort toward helping their Main Street program thrive.

If completing a Spirit of Main Street nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Detailed description of the volunteer/staff member actions, achievements, and involvement in the organization, and how these have benefited the community and enhanced the central business district
  • Images of the nominee in action

PRESERVATION HERO

This award is presented to an individual, organization, or business that has shown outstanding leadership in revitalizing and preserving Ohio communities.

If nominating a Preservation Hero, please provide these support materials:

  • Detailed description of the person’s or organization’s involvement in the historic preservation field, the activities undertaken, and how their actions made a positive preservation impact
  • Images of the nominee(s) in action

RURAL PRESERVATION AWARD

This award is presented to an individual, organization, or business demonstrating excellence in rural stewardship.

If completing a Rural Preservation Award nomination, please provide these support materials:

  • Description of the farm, including location, size, ownership history, historic buildings & structures on site, etc
  • If buildings or structures have been adapted for modern use, describe how their historic character has been preserved & maintained
  • Explain the historical significance of the property and note if it is listed in any national, state or local register or inventory
  • Images of the nominated farm/site

Who is Eligible?

All Ohioans are invited to submit nominations for consideration. The spirit of these awards is to recognize revitalization and preservation achievement across the state. All projects must have been completed by December 31, 2011. The decisions of the selection committee are final. The committee reserves the right to move submissions to more appropriate categories if necessary.

 

When and where will the
Awards be given?

The Annual Awards Luncheon presentation will take place Thursday May 10 in Toledo, at Heritage Ohio’s Annual Preservation & Revitalization Conference. For conference information, go to www.heritageohio.org. All award winners are encouraged to attend the Annual Awards Luncheon and will receive two complimentary lunches.

 

What are the judgment criteria?

Entries should reflect creativity, innovation, replicability, public/private partnership, and successful solutions to revitalization and preservation issues and concerns. The committee will seek to award entries across a variety of community sizes and project budgets. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Innovation: Does the project or program offer an innovative or unique approach to revitalization and/or preservation?
  • Inclusiveness: Is the project or outcome inclusive? Were partnerships used to get the job done?
  • Cost Effectiveness: Does the project demonstrate the efficient use of available local resources?
  • Local Appropriateness: Does the project reinforce and capitalize on the unique assets of the community?
  • Outcome: Did the project have a significant impact on revitalization and/or preservation efforts?
  • Integrity: Where applicable, projects must conform to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

How do I submit a nomination?

You have three options for submitting your award nominations:

1) Just complete the nomination form at the bottom of this page, upload your nomination images, and click submit!

2) Submit your nomination information and images via email to: heritageohio@gmail.com. We will acknowledge all emailed submissions. If we don't acknowledge your submission then we haven't received it.

3) Submit your nomination and images via mail. Six submission packets for each nomination are required – one original and five copies (for six total packets). Each submission packet should contain:

  • Fully completed and signed nomination form
  • Summary description of the award nomination (2-4 paragraphs)
  • Support materials, as listed in the award description
  • At least two digital images, such as Before/After images, burned to a CD (please use images no smaller than 4”x6” with at least 300dpi resolution)
  • Original copies of promotional materials used
