How Can I Fund My Historic Home Restoration?

Historic Preservation Grants & Funds for Homeowners in Ohio

Please note that Heritage Ohio is not affiliated with any of the below programs, and cannot offer any additional advice on securing funds. Please contact these programs, or your local government for further assistance.

Sources of Funding & Assistance:

  • Currently, the state of Ohio does not offer tax credits for the rehabilitation of owner-occupied historic homes. Some municipalities do have funds available for improvements to historic homes. Check with your local government to see if this is available in your area.
  • There are federal tax credits available for improved energy efficiency in existing homes, whether historic or not. To receive these credits, you must fill out a 5695 form with your tax return. We recommend that you contact your tax preparer for guidance.
  • For Northeast Ohioans, your home may take advantage of low-interest loans and technical advice available through The Heritage Home Program, currently available for residents of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lorain, Lucas, and Summit Counties.
  • Be aware, that generally speaking, most government and non-profit grant programs award money only to income producing (i.e. commercial) properties, or properties that contribute to the community good in some manner. However, local fundraising is a viable alternative to grants. If your property is of exceptional local interest, consider taking the approach of the Jones Mansion, and offering tours of and events in the home to raise funds during and after restoration.
