For over fifty years, Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects (formerly Chambers and Chambers Architects) has assisted those who have been given the responsibility of caring for historic properties through Restoration, Adaptive Re-use and Cyclical Maintenance. Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects has extensive restoration and renovation experience, providing design and project management for a wide range of projects. Historic Structures Reports, National Register Nominations, and Historic Tax Act Certifications form a significant part of the firm. In addition to historical research and technical specifications, Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects is experienced in working with special materials such as integrally colored plaster, tile mosaics, decorative bronze work, stained glass, and tile roofing.
Chambers, Murphy & Burge’s architectural staff utilize state of the art technology to research, document, and analyze historic building and materials. The Chambers, Murphy & Burge approach to non-destructive testing is tailored to each project, providing the best information and most cost effective solutions for that client.
It is the job of Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects to facilitate good stewardship of these significant properties. In many cases these historically significant structures no longer serve their original use or need to be updated to meet modern needs. In these situations creative design solutions must be implemented to update these structures while preserving their important historic elements. This involves careful consideration of building code and accessibility requirements, while using “the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.” These Standards are the measure by which the National Parks Service determines a properly executed restoration.

Heritage Architectural Associates is an award-winning full service architectural firm that specializes in architectural restoration, additions to historic structures, new design within historic contexts, and downtown revitalization. Established in 1998, the firm is led by Steven Avdakov, a registered architect in five states with over twenty-five years of architectural and historic preservation experience. He holds a Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, and his experience meets federal professional qualifications for Architecture and Historic Architecture.
The firm’s work is grounded by a philosophy that respects the impact of time upon the built environment. Heritage has done extensive work on downtown revitalization projects, theaters, educational facilities and historic house museums. Most of the firm’s commissions to date have involved publicly funded rehabilitation to historic resources that are listed or are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Thus, much of the firm’s work has been subject to Section 106 review for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation by numerous local historic preservation boards, several State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO), and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Heritage also offers significant experience in preservation master planning, Historic Structures Reports (HSR’s), nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, and documentation of historic resources.
The firm has served as a catalyst for many community-based preservation projects that have involved public sector and non-profit clients. Due to the budget constraints of this type of work, phased implementation and cost analysis are integrated into all stages of the design process. Heritage also offers expertise in identifying funding sources to allow organizations to launch projects and then continue their efforts to completion through a phased approach. The firm has long-standing relationships with several clients through multiple-phased projects.
