Student Preservationist Conference Scholarship is back for a 2nd year!
We’re pleased to announce that former Heritage Ohio Trustee Glenn Harper has again made the Student Preservation Conference Scholarship available for the 2018 conference! The scholarship includes a full registration to attend the conference (including our Legacy Circle Reception on October 22), two nights lodging at the conference hotel, Metropolitan at the 9 in downtown Cleveland, and up to a $100 travel stipend.
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship you need to be currently enrolled in a degree program, a resident of Ohio, and under the age of 40 as of October 22.
If you would like to join us, please complete the scholarship application no later than Friday, September 14. We’ll announce the winner of the scholarship Friday, September 21.

A Brief History of Columbus

Join Heritage Ohio and Columbus historian Ed Lentz for a webinar discussing some of the interesting histories of Ohio’s capital city. In preparation for Heritage Ohio’s Annual Conference the following week, learn a little about the city we will be exploring during various tours offered.

Ed Lentz has been teaching, writing and exploring the history of Central Ohio for more than fifty years. When not doing that sort of thing, he teaches from time to time at various local colleges and universities. He writes for local newspapers, consults in history and historic preservation and keeps company with his wife, two cats and occasionally visiting two children.
Ed worked at the Ohio Historical Society for a number of years and was Executive Director of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation from 1983 to 1988 and from 2013 to 2017.
Mr. Lentz holds degrees in history from Princeton University and The Ohio State University. He has written a weekly column on Columbus history for the This Week Community Newspapers since 1992. He has been Historical Consultant to Columbus Neighborhoods programming on WOSU Public Media since 2010. He is the author of several books, including Columbus – The Story of a City ( 2003), A Home of Their Own (2010) and Historic Columbus (2012).

2015 Annual Conference
The Heritage Ohio Annual Revitalization and Preservation Conference returns to the historic Westin Columbus October 5-7 in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
This year’s conference will once again present great learning opportunities for preservationists, community revitalization volunteers, and development professionals. There will be many activities such as field sessions, educational workshops, hands on training, and the chance to network with like-minded community members. In addition, AIA credits will be offered on many of the sessions.

OPENING PLENARY SPEAKER
Donovan Rypkema is principal of PlaceEconomics, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate and economic development consulting firm. The firm specializes in services to public and non-profit sector clients who are dealing with downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization and the reuse of historic structures. In 2004 Rypkema established Heritage Strategies International, a new firm created to provide similar services to worldwide clients. He also teaches a graduate course in preservation economics at the University of Pennsylvania.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Mary Means has spent more than 30 years building bridges between plans and people. She has helped scores of cities, towns, counties and civic interest groups make their communities better places to live, work and visit. Prior to entering consulting, Mary led the team that created the National Main Street program at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

2015 Annual Awards Call for Nominations
It’s time once again to honor the people, places and projects that exemplify Heritage Ohio’s commitment to growth through preservation and revitalization. Award nominations are due by 5:00 PM, Monday June 15, 2015, for projects completed by December 31, 2014. This year, nominations will be available beginning Wednesday, May 1. We will be accepting nominations for 13 awards using the 2015 Annual Awards nomination form below.
We are continuing to encourage the submission of digital video files that tell the story of the nominee or project. Just include the video file as part of the nomination form that you submit. We look forward to seeing your nominations!
Call for Conference Session Proposals
Heritage Ohio is currently planning for our Annual Conference to be held in Columbus October 5-7, 2015. If you have a session that might be interesting to our audience of revitalization & preservation advocates and professionals link HERE for our proposal guidelines, proposals will be accepted through February 28.
Nominations open for Heritage Ohio's Annual Awards
Earlier this week we opened our call for nominations for the Heritage Ohio 2014 Annual Awards. The annual awards recognize the best in the state for historic preservation and downtown revitalization in categories such as Best Public/Private Partnership, Spirit of Main Street, Best Commercial Rehabilitation, and (new this year) Historic Farmstead of the Year! You can learn more about the award categories here.
We will accept award submissions through Friday, May 23, with judging in June. We’ll honor the award winners at a special ceremony during our Annual Conference in Kent on September 23.
So, if you have a project or person that deserves special recognition in the world of historic preservation or downtown revitalization, we invite you to complete and submit a nomination form for judging. Good luck!
