  • Take a Hike – Cleveland

    Take a Hike offers six (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, University Circle, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.

  • Picnic with the Police & Super Hero Day – Cambridge

    Join Cambridge Main Street, local law enforcement, and members of the Southeaster Ohio Ghostbusters for Picnic with the Police. Kids are invited to dress up as their favorite super hero and participate in the super hero training camp. DJ Huffy will play your favorite music, enjoy a hot dog, and have a great time!

  • Concert in the Park & Movie Night – Chardon

    Enjoy an evening of music at Chardon Courthouse Square followed by a screening of Top Gun.

  • First Friday: Cops & Shops – Delaware

    Head downtown and celebrate Delaware’s local heroes! There will be food, activities for children, and vehicles to explore.

  • First Friday: Art Walk – Kent

    Join us for the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Kent! All participating galleries and businesses will stay open until at least 8pm on the first Friday of each month, for all to come enjoy and explore the artwork inside their businesses. Enjoy refreshments, enter in special drawings, view artist demonstrations and participate in activities throughout the downtown district.

  • Front Porch Concert Series – Lakewood

    Join LakewoodAlive on Friday evenings from 7-9 pm this summer for LakewoodAlive’s Front Porch Concert Series! This week features The Corner Store Funk Band. This fun-loving group is sure to delight the audience with a danceable form of music that blends soul, jazz, and rhythm & blues. Attendees are encouraging to bring their family, friends, blankets, chairs and snacks for an entertaining evening at this open-air venue.

  • First Friday: Once Upon a Time – Marietta

    This kid-friendly event is themed for our favorite storybook characters, movies, novels, and more.

  • First Friday: Hometown Heroes – Middletown

    Help us celebrate Middletown’s own Hometown Heroes! Spend an evening with our Police & Fire Department, First Responders and local veterans and soldiers! Police cruisers, fire trucks, k-9 units and more will be there. A chance for the community to meet & greet the men and women who protect us every day. Come show your appreciation. Kids young and old are encouraged to dress up like their favorite heroes!

  • Movie Night: Wonder Woman – Middletown

    Head to downtown Middletown and watch Wonder Woman following First Friday.

  • First Friday: Family Fun Night – Mount Vernon

    Get ready to celebrate those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer with Main Street Mount Vernon. MSMV invites you to explore historic downtown Mount Vernon through live entertainment, classic car cruise-in during June, July, and August, and a variety of local food and shopping, kids’ entertainment, a beer garden, and more.

    Bring your brood to “Family Fun Night”. Kids’ Choice Youth Band will take the main stage with Andrew & Sarah on the South Stage at Buchwald Plaza.

  • First Friday: Putt-Putt Downtown – Tipp City

    Join Downtown Tipp City Partnership for the first annual Putt-Putt adventure course through the shops of Downtown Tipp City! Each participating shop will have their own unique Putt-Putt hole to challenge you along your way. This is family friendly and we encourage everyone to come decked out in your best golf gear!

  • Van Wert Area Community Band Concert – Van Wert

    An evening filled with local talent, the Van Wert Area Community Concert Band performing at Fountain Park.

  • Free Movies in the Park: Hotel for Dogs – Vermilion

    Main Street Vermilion brings another season of free, family-friendly flicks under the stars and riverside at East Exchange Park in the heart of downtown Vermilion. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and your favorite movie snacks.

    In Hotel for Dogs, a foster home that doesn’t allow pets finds 16-year old Andi and her younger brother Bruce turning an abandoned hotel into a home for their dog.

    Help us celebrate Main Street’s upcoming Hot Diggity Dog Day tonight with a dog craft and a few friendly dogs, including Ben, the Main Street Vermilion greeter to welcome you to the movie.

  • First Friday: Hot Air Balloons & BBQ – Wadsworth

    The kick-off to Wadsworth’s Balloon Festival weekend. Get up close to a tethered hot air balloon and baskets. Enjoy barbecue at downtown restaurants and vendors, including The American Legion’s famous Pig Roast.

  • Antiques in the Alley – Millersburg

    A full day of browsing the streets, stores and alleys of Millersburg for the perfect treasure to take home. Whether you are looking for artwork, yard art, glassware or antique dresser, it can be found here! Stop for lunch at a pub or street vendor-spend the night at one of our hotels or inns-make a weekend of it! Entertainment will abound after dark!

  • Fridays on Prouty – Troy

    Fridays on Prouty is a free concert series and is a collaboration of the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center and Troy Main Street. This week, a Steely Dan tribute band will take the stage for the Fridays on Prouty concert series. This 10-piece Ohio based group called AJA came together to recreate the sounds of one of rock’s most legendary and enigmatic bands with stunning precision and energy. They lay down a tight and groovy rhythm section that handles the full spectrum of Steely beats from “Bodhisattva” to “Babylon Sisters” all with swing and precision.

  • Hidden Spaces – Van Wert

    Hidden Spaces is back! You’ll access to some of the great Hidden Spaces just steps off the sidewalk in Downtown Van Wert.

  • Remember When Rock Was Young Concert – Van Wert

    Craig A. Meyer and the Rocket Band will make you believe you are almost at an Elton John concert. Meyer has toured internationally and recorded with the likes of Frankie Valli and Barry Manilow and has headlined for Princess Cruises around the world. You’ll party into the night as we close out the Fountain Park concerts in a guaranteed flashy style! All Fountain Park Summer Music Series concerts are free & open to the public.

  • Run for Suds 5K – Chardon

    The Run for Suds 5k is back again as part of the Chardon Brewfest celebration! Start your day off right with a scenic run through Chardon before heading to The Brewfest. This race features finishers medals, tank tops, and a great spread of food at the finish line compliments of Heinen’s.

  • Hops in the Hangar – Middletown

    The First Annual Hops in the Hangar is a unique, craft beer aficionado’s event that will surely take flight at the Middletown Regional Airport. Gathering a blend of craft beer fans and aviation enthusiasts in an airplane hangar, Hops in the Hangar will be an EPIC event here in the tri-state area.

    Beer has never looked so cool as being served in a huge, operating airport hangar- talk about unique ambiance! Hops in the Hangar will feature a wide selection of beer from breweries big and small and showcase a variety of aircraft. Main Street Wooster presents “Sounds of Downtown!” This street music series will feature a variety of musicians and performances throughout the summer season. This session of Sounds of Downtown features Ed Marthey~Piano To Go and Jeremy Clevenger acoustic.

  • The Great Marietta Marketplace – Marietta

    The Great Marietta Marketplace is a unique, mobile-curated market showcasing the products of local and regional vendors and small businesses. This outdoor marketplace is located just footsteps from downtown, providing visitors the opportunity to browse booths of art, quality handcrafts, vintage goods, and much more!

  • Medina Fest – Medina

    In celebration of the 200th birthday of the City of Medina, Main Street Medina will hold Medina Fest on Saturday, August 25th, from 9am to 4pm. The event will feature a full day of fun, food, music, and activities, celebrating all things Medina! The event is sponsored by PNC, and is admission free.

    Scheduled entertainment will feature Rick Gaudet (acoustic guitar), Jim Gill (guitar), Grady Miller (americana & blues), Swizzle Stick Band (motown/funk), and Danjo Orchestra (big band).

    A Made in Medina showcase bazaar will feature local businesses and artists promoting/selling products made in Medina.

  • Home Grown Tomato Fest – Tipp City

    Head downtown to Canal Lock Park for the 2nd Annual Home Grown Tomato Fest, where tomatoes are the center of attention and all activities are BYOT (bring your own tomato). Local bartenders will be facing off as we see who will be known for having the Best Bloody Mary. This adults only portion of the fest will take place inside the historic Roller Mill. Purchase your tickets to sample and vote. Along with drinks, there will be food trucks offering tomato inspired eats.

  • Trans Am Nationals Cruise-In – Tipp City

Downtown Tipp City Partnership will have historic scavenger hunt cards that you can pick up at the Tipp City Public Library the week leading up to the event, or day of, where the Easter Bunny will be hanging out and taking pictures (Starting at 5pm)! Your historic scavenger hunt cards will give you clues about each building where your Easter eggs will be throughout town!

  • First Settlement Festival – Marietta

    To mark the occasion of Marietta’s 230th Birthday in April 2018, in partnership with The Adelphia Music Hall, we are excited to announce a brand new music festival in downtown Marietta on Saturday, April 7th: First Settlement Festival. First Settlement Festival is a daylong outdoor music festival that takes place all throughout downtown Marietta. The Main Stage Lot will include a beer garden featuring craft beer by Marietta Brewing Co.. as well as merchandise tents and more for the community to enjoy. What’s the best part? Enjoying music at First Settlement Festival is totally free and open to the public!

  • Spring Shop Hop – Tipp City

    Let’s kick off those Winter blues and welcome in April with the Shopkeeper’s Spring Shop Hop! Punch cards can be picked up around town on Saturday, April 7th! As you “hop” around town receive a unique stamp from each location. When your card is full turn it in at any participating business for a chance to win our grand prize basket of Tipp City goodies!

  • Second Saturday: Chardon’s Traveling Tea Party – Chardon

    Join Chardon Tomorrow for an early evening of shopping and entertaining as we kick off our Second Saturday events with a “Traveling Tea Party.” The afternoon starts at 4 pm at the Heritage House where you can pick up your tea cup, raffle ticket, and schedule of events. Then shop ’til you drop from 4-7 pm with participating shops throughout the city offering special treats and promotions.
    Registration for the event is $10 and limited to the first 200 guests. Each guest will receive a ceramic mug and goody bag to use as they shop the square and stop at participating shops! Guests are automatically entered into a raffle for a Tea Party gift basket. Additional raffle tickets will be given for each $10 spent at a participating retailer/restaurant.

  • Knowing Your Home Workshop: Step Repair & Replacement – Lakewood

    Join LakewoodAlive and our friends over at Cleveland Lumber Company for a workshop dedicated to exterior step repairs and replacement.
    We will review the anatomy of steps as well as common stair repairs. The remainder of the workshop will be focused on materials ( wood vs. composite), routine maintenance to keep them in good repair as well as answer your questions to ensure that your project will be completed with success.

    Main Street Kent will host the annual “Seven Courses of Kent” dinner party in downtown Kent. This special event will take place at Treno Ristorante, an upscale Italian restaurant situated in the historical train depot overlooking the Cuyahoga River. Guests will enjoy a variety of soup, salad, hors d’oeuvre, entrée and dessert courses from these seven Kent establishments: Burnside Barbecue, Franklin Hotel Bar, Lucci’s Place, NINETEEN10, Twisted Meltz, Popped!, Treno Ristorante. It’s a great opportunity to indulge in some of Kent’s best cuisine, all in one night!

  • Guys in Bloom – Vermilion

    Guys in Bloom is the first ever, manly event that’s all about cigars, wine and flowers. Fifty gets you two hand-rolled cigars, 2 drinks, tapas and entry into the putting contest. Hosted by the Wine Vault, which will be closed for this event, the menu features a cheese and meat charcuterie board, mini crawfish crab cakes and pork belly sliders with apple slaw.
    Don’t wait…this is you chance to hang with the guys all in the name of flowers. This is a Vermilion in Bloom fundraiser and all of the proceeds will be donated to this Main Street Vermilion beautification program.

  • Dicken’s Victorian Village – Cambridge

    Take a trip back in time and experience old world England as historic downtown Cambridge, Ohio, is charmingly transformed into a Dickens Victorian Village each holiday season. From November through mid January each year, visitors are invited to stroll amidst over 92 scenes of 166 lifelike figures representing classic scenes from Victorian society.
    This innovative public art exhibition is enjoyed by families, couples, and groups alike – an experience that engages the senses as you explore the charming streetscape, striking historic architecture, and eclectic shops and eateries of Cambridge.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland

  • North Pole Express – Lebanon

    The LM&M Railroad will have our station area decorated with lights for the Christmas season. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available on the platform while you wait for your train and are included with your ticket. Each passenger will receive one cookie that is peanut free, egg free, tree nut free, and dairy free. Every passenger will receive a FREE souvenir hot chocolate mug. Each child will receive a special “North Pole Express” souvenir train ticket.
    During the hour long journey Santa and his elves will make their way through the train to visit with each family. Every child will receive a bell from Santa’s sleigh. We encourage you to bring your own camera, pictures with Santa are allowed and encouraged. Balloon artists will also be on-board the train.

    Kick off the holiday season with an entire weekend of celebrations! Welcome to “Home for the Holidays,” a Christmas wonderland brought to you by Main Street Delaware. Join other families and feel the sense of love and community all night with live reindeer, carolers, free carriage rides, ice skating, a magnificent tree light, and a special visit from Santa and the Coca-Cola Holiday Caravan! All of these elements create wonderful Christmas memories for families.

  • First Friday: A Christmas Night – Greenville

    Head to downtown Greenville for a magical night of Christmas cheer.

  • First Friday: Moonlight Madness – Marietta

    Join us for the fifth annual Main Street Delaware Holiday Open House. Main Street Delaware’s annual Holiday Open House features specials and free community events for all! Come downtown and enjoy our local shops, see Santa in his home away from the North Pole, and much more. Stores will be open their regular business hours all day Saturday.

  • Dash for Dancer – Delaware

    Oh, no! Santa has lost Dasher the reindeer! Explore downtown, following Santa’s clues to find him and have fun along the way. Along the way, you’ll gather reindeer treats, make crafts, and even see a hidden space or two within our downtown. Begin your hunt at the Main Street Delaware office at 20 E. Winter St. Stop by anytime between 11 am – 1 pm to pick up your first clue.
    This family-friendly downtown scavenger hunt is free of charge so all families are able to participate and make memories in downtown. However, Main Street Delaware is also accepting voluntary donations to help fund Christmas downtown or boxes of cereal to donate to local food banks.
    Don’t forget to stop by the Santa House, located at Strand Theatre, to tell Santa you’ve found Dasher once you’re done. Santa House will open at 1 pm on Saturday. The ice skating rink at Willis Education Center will also be open on Saturday from 12 – 9 pm.

  • The Christmas Tree Ship – Vermilion

    No other community can boast a Christmas tradition like this one. Main Street Vermilion invites everyone, young and old, to bundle up and gather riverside at McGarvey’s Landing for the arrival of our Christmas Tree Ship, an icebreaker stocked with Christmas trees and holiday cheer. It’s a heartwarming sight to see the breaker make its way down the river with a US Coast Guard escort, which you’re welcome to tour. There’s music from Vermilion’s own Sid Jordan and the Vermilion Community Band, cookies, donuts and hot chocolate to keep you warm and awards for the winners of the Christmas coloring contest.

  • “Delaware: You’re Home for the Holidays” Christmas Parade – Delaware

    Come out for the annual Main Street Delaware Christmas Parade. This year’s theme is “Delaware: Your Home for the Holidays.” The Delaware Post Office will be collecting children’s letters to Santa along the route. Be sure to have your little ones write their wish list and the Post Office will be sure to get them delivered safely!

  • Holiday Tour of Homes – Painesville

    Six historic locations will be open and on display by the Downtown Painesville Organization to celebrate the holiday season from 1-4 pm. Starting at the Railroad Museum on Railroad Street, the self-guided tour will take you through the Conway Land Title Building, Painesville United Methodist Church, Fitzgerald’s Irish Bed & Breakfast, the Social Parlor in College Hall at Lake Erie College, and will end at the Collacott House. Individuals are also encouraged to attend vespers at Lake Erie College following the tour at Morley Music Hall.
    This tour is to celebrate the holiday season with the community. It is also an opportunity to see and learn about the historic architecture which is not normally open to the public. Proceeds from this event will go to the Downtown Painesville Organization to support its mission of “Building a strong future, while preserving our historic past.”

    This popular annual event features tours of Warehouse District apartments along with new developments in the neighborhood and nearby areas. At stops along the way, enjoy delicious food samplings from neighborhood restaurants and bars. Live music adds to the festivities and the evening winds down with a dessert reception.

  • Light Up Vermilion – Vermilion

    The streets of downtown Vermilion brighten for this evening of holiday shopping and fun. Downtown merchants open their doors for extended evening shopping hours, many offering special deals and refreshments to visitors. Stroll the downtown district, stop for hot chocolate or something more grown up and get yourself in the mood for winter holidays. Bring the kids to Main Street where they can write a letter to Santa and make a Christmas lantern to light the way.
    The Vermilion Arts Guild will be open that night serving up sweet treats. All the artwork and jewelry in the gallery that evening will be 10% off. This is a great place to shop small, shop local and shop for Christmas.
    After you shop, head over the Ritter Public Library for a free holiday concert by the Vermilion Music Association Concert Band at 7PM. ‘Tis the season to enjoy your community!

  • Ugly Sweater Tavern Trek – Kent

    Enjoy tasty Great Lakes Brewing Company beers on a fun holiday trek around downtown Kent.   • Dicken’s Victorian Village – Cambridge

    Take a trip back in time and experience old world England as historic downtown Cambridge, Ohio, is charmingly transformed into a Dickens Victorian Village each holiday season. From November through mid January each year, visitors are invited to stroll amidst over 92 scenes of 166 lifelike figures representing classic scenes from Victorian society.
    This innovative public art exhibition is enjoyed by families, couples, and groups alike – an experience that engages the senses as you explore the charming streetscape, striking historic architecture, and eclectic shops and eateries of Cambridge.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland

    Take a Hike offers five (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.

  • North Pole Express – Lebanon

    The LM&M Railroad will have our station area decorated with lights for the Christmas season. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available on the platform while you wait for your train and are included with your ticket. Each passenger will receive one cookie that is peanut free, egg free, tree nut free, and dairy free. Every passenger will receive a FREE souvenir hot chocolate mug. Each child will receive a special “North Pole Express” souvenir train ticket.
    During the hour long journey Santa and his elves will make their way through the train to visit with each family. Every child will receive a bell from Santa’s sleigh. We encourage you to bring your own camera, pictures with Santa are allowed and encouraged. Balloon artists will also be on-board the train.

  • First Friday: A ThankFULL Holiday – Delaware

    Live the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday by joining family, friends, and neighbors downtown for November’s First Friday, Thankfull Holiday, sponsored by the United Way of Delaware County Hunger Alliance. Celebrate the joys of the season and put nourishing food on the table for ALL in our community.
    There will be lots of fun, free activities for the whole family. Bring a shelf-stable food donation to fill oversized shopping carts throughout the downtown and share what you are thankful for on our Gratitude Wall. For every 5 or 10 items donated, receive a shopping pass for 5% or 10% off at participating businesses. In addition, there will be children’s crafts, face painting, and street magic performances by Magic Nate.

    Members representing UpGrade Ohio and the Southeast Ohio Public Energy Council will discuss the latest opportunities available for Southeast Ohio communities and local businesses within the scope of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and public and private alternative vehicle improvements and investments. The workshop will include information about state-funded grants and financing for energy usage upgrades (through electricity and gas utility usage), a free renewable energy assistance program, community choice aggregation, mercantile customer pricing and demand response initiatives, energy performance contracts, and much more! Local communities, like the Marietta region, have much to gain as we move to cleaner and more affordable energy choices in the future.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland

    Take a Hike offers five (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.

  • First Friday: Picnic with the Cops & Chalk it Up – Delaware

    Main Street Delaware’s First Friday will feature a free “Picnic with the Cops” celebration that includes a cop car cruise in, a children’s police academy training camp, an obstacle course, games, hot dogs, freeze pops, and more for all to enjoy.
    Due to severe weather on July’s First Friday, rather than cancelling the Chalk it Up contest, it was delayed to August First Friday.

Our local farmers cater to us every Saturday; it’s our turn to give back. Excitingly, we give back to them by giving back to our shoppers!
    Join us downtown on August 5th, between 9 and noon, where we will continue this celebration with a plethora of prizes.   • Chalk it Up! – Vermilion

The Best State Parks and Metro Parks Across Ohio

Ohio has natural beauty in spades! We ought to know, we spend much of our year traveling around the state, and the team at Heritage Ohio has some pretty strong opinions on the best parks in Ohio. Here’s our favorite state, city and metro parks, organized by region:

Northeast Ohio Parks

Ohio Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is Ohio’s only national park, but you couldn’t ask for a better example of Ohio’s natural splendor. Just a short drive south of downtown Cleveland, Cuyahoga Valley has plenty to offer any visitor. A few highlights of the park are the 65-foot high Brandywine Falls, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and the historic village of Peninsula.
 
Ohio’s National Park covers 33,000 acres of parkland, leaving you and your family many weekends of exploration.

Liberty Park – Twinsburg

Just outside of Twinsburg is one of the hidden gems of Northeast Ohio. Liberty Park has a diverse offering of natural spaces for a suburban park. Visitors will delight in the natural beauty of the Tinkers Creek Nature Preserve and the towering Twinsburg Ledges area, both located in the park. You can explore both and more on the numerous trails within the park.

Holden Arboretum is just a short drive from historic downtown Chardon in Geauga County. The arboretum will be a unique experience for many visitors, including Ohioans. Some of the many offerings of the Holden Arboretum include a butterfly garden, several rhododendron gardens, a hedge collection, and the famous Canopy Walk.

Mill Creek Park

It may be hard to believe, but Mill Creek Park in Youngstown rivals other large metropolitan parks like Central Park in terms of absolute beauty and depth. The sprawling park covers 4,400 acres and has diverse areas and topography. Highlights of the park for new visitors include Lanterman’s Mill, several historic bridges, the Wall Garden, and many archaeological sites from Youngstown’s steel-making history.

Franklin Mills Riveredge Park

Located in downtown Kent, Franklin Mills Riveredge Park is small compared with other parks on this list, but will surprise you with its design and features. The main focus of the park in the Cuyahoga River with an arched stone dam. You can explore the river along a boardwalk that follows the river. There are plenty of observation areas, as well as benches and tables to enjoy your day in downtown Kent.

Bonus: Killbuck Marsh

Located between Millersburg and Wooster, Killbuck Marsh is a hidden gem just south of Route 30. The area has an extensive natural history, and several Ice Age animals such as mastodon have been unearthed. Some of these animals can be seen at the Killbuck Valley Museum, just down the road.

Southeast Ohio Parks

Hocking Hills State Park

Hocking Hills is quite possibly the most famous of all the Ohio State Parks. Within minutes of arriving, you will certainly see why. The park is divided into five sections, but really they are parks within parks and all worth a visit. Absolute must-see features include the falls at Old Man’s Cave, the Cantwell Cliffs, and the nearby Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve.
Beyond the parks, there are rustic cabins to stay in the area and lots of unique small towns to explore.

Hocking Hills has a wealth of lodging options, including treehouses, luxury yurts, cabins, and even a cute vintage train car!

Lake Hope State Park

Lake Hope State Park

Just south of Hocking Hills State Park is Lake Hope. The park is encapsulated by Zaleski State Forest, making for some beautiful scenery. The beach is a great place to relax and go for a swim. The area has numerous hiking trails and connectors, including a trek up to the famous Moonville Tunnel. You can also visit the restored Hope Furnace, a blast furnace that sits near one end of the lake.
 

Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork State Park

Just a few miles from historic Cambridge, is Salt Fork State Park, Ohio’s largest state park. The Park surrounds much of Salt Fork Lake and offers a variety of activities, such as hiking, boating, horseback riding, and golf.

Central Ohio Parks

Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Named for a famed, and lost, Native American petroglyph that was found in the gorge, Blackhand Gorge is one of the most beautiful areas in Central Ohio. The preserve has many hiking trails to explore, as well as remnants of its past, including a section of the Ohio & Erie Canal locks and an interurban tunnel. Visitors can also explore the area via canoe or kayak on the Licking River.

Buckeye Lake State Park

Renowned in Central Ohio for boating, Buckeye Lake State Park is a water lover’s paradise. The lake is surrounded by quaint communities, and has plenty of activities for non-boaters as well. You can even visit Cranberry Bog, which is a natural marvel. Tours of the bog usually occur in June.

Mohican State Park

Located between the historic communities of Wooster, Millersburg, Mount Vernon, and Ashland, Mohican is a forested oasis and perfect for a weekend getaway. The park has several hiking trails, campgrounds, and even a covered bridge.

Dawes Arboretum

Just east of Columbus, you will find a true gem of a park, Dawes Arboretum. The Arboretum seems to have it all: historic Daweswood Farm, numerous trails, a nature center, formal Japanese garden, and even a driving tour. It’s a definite stop for any nature lover, and best of all, it’s free to visit!
While in the area, make sure to visit the newly revamped downtown in Newark and catch a show at the historic Midland Theatre.

Rhododendron Cove State Nature Preserve

Located just south of Lancaster, Rhododendron Cove Preserve sits on an unassuming hill, but offers a bounty of beauty once you make it to the summit. Atop the hill are dozens of Rhododendrons nestled amongst rocky outcroppings, making for great photography. After visiting Rhododendron Cove, travel down the road and visit two additional parks: Wahkeena Nature Preserve and Clear Creek Metro Park.

Bonus: Topiary Park

On the east side of downtown Columbus, The Topiary Park is a living art installation on the grounds of the former Ohio Deaf School campus. Visitors can either take docent-led tours or explore the park on their own. In addition to the numerous plant sculptures, there is also a “tree walk” visitors can take to see the many types of trees within the park. Choosy Traveler has details on some other worthwhile parks in the Columbus area, including Battelle Darby Creek, where you can see wild bison, and Shrum Mound.

John Bryan State Park – Clifton

Located near the historic Village of Clifton, John Bryan State Park is defined by the Little Miami River and the Clifton Gorge area it carved out. The striking features of the gorge and the forested landscape surrounding it make for some beautiful hiking scenery year-round. The next time you visit Clifton Mill, make sure to stop by John Bryan State Park.

Caesar Creek State Park

Nestled between Waynesville and Harveysburg, Caesar Creek State Park is a fossil hunter’s playground. You will need to apply for a fossil collecting permit to hunt fossils at the park, but it is well worth the effort. Some common finds include trilobites, brachiopods, and corals. In addition to fossil hunting, the park also offers camping, swimming, and boating. Other attractions in the area include historic downtown Lebanon and Caesar’s Creek Pioneer Village.

Like the name suggests, the prominent feature of the Fallsville Wildlife Area is a large, serene waterfall. The small park packs in the beauty and is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll to the eye-pleasing waterfall and old mill site.
While in the area, check out the historic downtown of nearby Wilmington. There are a lot of great shops and the inside of the Clinton County Courthouse is stunning.

Ault Park

When you look at “must-see” lists of Cincinnati, you will undoubtedly come across Ault Park. A visit to the park will certainly show you why. As you arrive, you will immediately notice the large and picturesque Renaissance-style pavilion, popular with wedding parties. Beyond the pavilion, you will find several walking trails, a beautiful botanical garden, and plenty of relaxing space.

Side Cut Metropark

Side Cut Metropark is steeped in history. The park occupied land that was once part of a side cut of the Miami & Erie Canals. You can still visit 3 of the 6 locks from the canals, having been restored by WPA workers in the 1930s. Beyond the historic locks, the park offers picturesque scenery, an extensive network of trails, and plenty of wildlife.

Wildwood Preserve was once the home of Champion Spark Plug founder, Robert Stranahan. The park has an amazing wooded trail network and the property still has the Georgian Colonial Manor House Stranahan built. It is a must visit park in the heart of Toledo.

Magee Marsh Wildlife Area

Every spring, thousands of migratory birds visit Magee Marsh on their way to their summer nesting spots. Located on the shore of Lake Erie, the marsh is not only a destination for birders, but the extensive trail network of the wildlife area and nature center make for a great afternoon out with the family.

North Bass Island State Park

Unlike other parks on this list, getting to North Bass Island is a bit challenging to get to, but worth the hassle. Currently, the only means to get to the island are boat and airplane. Once you get to the island, you’ll be able to take in the gorgeous, untouched wilderness. Fishing is permitted on the island, as well as hiking and camping via permit.
