Here is an easy introduction to the 20% federal historic tax credit and 25% Ohio historic preservation tax credit which you can use to rehabilitate your historic building. How Wi-Fi Can Revitalize Your Downtown Webinar

More than just the provision of high speed Internet, an intelligent Wi-Fi network can provide a Main Street organization or interested city governments a platform for communication, branding, placemaking, and public engagement. A captive portal system provides direct communication to the community about events, businesses, and special promotions downtown. An intelligent Wi-Fi network can also collect valuable analytics on who comes downtown, how they travel, how long they stay, and how often they return. Main Street organizations can use this information to study the impact of events, provide information for business attraction and retention, and drive decision making, just for starters.

Katie Meyer


Katie Meyer is the Smart City Policy and Program Manager at Cincinnati Bell. In her role, Katie works with municipalities and organizations to navigate smart city planning and implementation. Prior to Cincinnati Bell, Katie served as the Executive Director of Renaissance Covington for nine years where she implemented public Wi-Fi, several large-scale creative placemaking initiatives, public events, and more. Under her leadership, Renaissance Covington earned the Great American Main Street Award from Main Street America for their preservation-based revitalization efforts. Katie has also served as a downtown revitalization consultant with Thomas P. Miller and Associates developing strategic plans in Hot Springs, Arkansas and Billings, Montana. In 2015, Katie co-authored Walking Cincinnati: 32 Walking Tours Exploring Historic Neighborhoods, Stunning Riverfront Quarters, and Hidden Treasures in the Queen City. Katie earned her M.S. in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School in New York City. She also holds a B.A. in Political Science and Journalism from the University of Kentucky.

Amelia oversees the Bicycle Friendly America program, which includes Bicycle Friendly Community, Bicycle, Friendly Business, and Bicycle Friendly University. Before joining the League in December 2013, Amelia was the Campus Bicycle Coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (a Bronze Bicycle Friendly University!), where she experienced the BFU program from the campus perspective. Before that, she worked in communications at The Nature Conservancy’s worldwide headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Amelia has a Bachelor’s degree from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA and a Master’s of Science in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Johns Hopkins University.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland Take a Hike Tour in Cleveland
    Take a Hike offers six (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, University Circle, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.
  • South Town Cruise-In – Medina
    Join Main Street Medina for a weekly cruise-in in Medina’s South Town, Tuesday evenings, May 21-September 24th from 4-8pm at 233 Lafayette Rd (the former Hawkins Market parking lot, soon to be the new home of Medina County Habitat for Humanity). See some of the best classic, collectible, rat rod, hot rod, and muscle cars in Northeast Ohio, and enjoy classic tunes from the 1950-70’s with DJ Bruce. The South Town Cruise-In is free and open to the public.
  • Painesville Friday Night Car Cruise – Painesville

KidsFest features games and activities including the dunk tank (with Chardon teachers!), tug-o-war, pizza eating contest, dancing with Jasmine Dragons, and much more!
  • Farm to Table Dinner & Pie Auction – Portsmouth
    This year’s Main Street Portsmouth Farm to Table Dinner and Pie Auction consists of homemade chicken noodle soup, salad, veggies, and a pie. The meal is prepared and served by Portsmouth farmers market vendors. There will also have a live pie auction, where guests can bid on pies made by our farmers market vendors and donated by members of the community. There will also be live music and an open beer bar.

  • East Green Summer Concert Series: New Day Collective – Tiffin
    The New Day is a collective of vertan Detroit musicians. A new project, the band formed in 2019 and is currently working on their first record. Stylistically the band is rooted in Jazz Fusion, Funk, Rock, Latin, R&B and Hip Hop with a Detroit edge. The band plays a mix of originals and select covers from bands like The Brecker Bros, and Snarky Puppy and The Crusaders.

The 2019 Heritage Ohio Annual Preservation and Revitalization Conference will be held in historic downtown Newark, October 21-23, at The DoubleTree Hotel Newark.

Special Guests

This year, we are excited to announce our special guest presenters at our conference.

Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma will kick off the conference as the opening plenary speaker on Tuesday, October 22.

Chief Wallace was elected into office in 2006 and is the first woman to ever hold this position in her tribe. From 1968 to 2006, Chief Wallace worked at Crowder College.  She spent over 38 years in various capacities at the college; some of her positions included: Interim Academic Dean, Department Chair of Communications, Director of International Travel and Director of Adult Basic Education (GED). Chief Wallace holds degrees from several institutions, which include an Ed.S., M.A. and B.A. from Pittsburg State University and Post Graduate Studies at Tulsa, Arkansas, and Southwest Missouri State Universities.

The opening plenary is open to the public.

  • Historic US Route 20 Update/Refresh – Painesville
    The Historic US Route 20 Association aims to promote travel along the original 1926 alignment of US Route 20. This alignment avoids interstate highways and bypasses. The organization wish to bring people back into small town America, to shop locally and support local businesses to boost economic development in communities that may be bypassed by interstate highways or other more popular routes. The Association offers educational programs to these communities and works with local organizations and community leaders to discuss and implement the placement of historic markers indicating the original route to guide travelers and bring much needed attention to many small towns. The goal is to make US Route 20 a popular alternative to its more famous cousin, Route 66.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland Take a Hike Tour in Cleveland
    Take a Hike offers six (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, University Circle, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.

    Story Mobs are part of Marietta Main Street‘s Cash Mob Line-Up! Story Mobs are a little bit different than our normal Cash Mobs. Participants aren’t expected to shop, unless they want to! Instead, Story Mobbers will hear backstories about each participating business directly from the business owner. Mobbers will enjoy refreshments, live demos, sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes tours, and/or more thanks to each of our *surprise* participating locations! Each Story Mob event focuses on supporting local business in downtown Marietta.   • East Green Summer Concert Series: The Right Now – Tiffin
    Rescheduled concert from June 1st. Head to the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater for a free concert with The Right Now! The Right Now’s pop-meets-soul sound is more than a vehicle for Stefanie Berecz’s captivating voice.     Sculptures on the Square features 22 life-sized sculptures created by internationally renowned artist, Seward Johnson. Troy Main Street also invites visitors to be “Be Part of the Art” with art-related activities and experiences throughout the exhibition period. June 14th will serve as the kick-off gala with onsite artists and a musical performance led by 50s and 60s variety group, The Buzz Ford Show featuring the American Kings.

We have several speakers lined up to talk with you about local projects as well as hands-on opportunities to do some placemaking in Downtown Van Wert. We will have sessions on painting colorful crosswalks, opportunities to discover how temporary signage can increase foot traffic in your downtown as well as a chance to spruce up an existing pedestrian alleyway. Please come prepared by wearing comfortable shoes and clothes that you do not mind getting splashed with a little paint. Wrist bands are free for kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult. (Tickets are only sold day of at the Armory). All golfers will receive a score card to be used as they go around to each hole and putt, shop, eat, and have fun!
  • South Town Cleanup – Medina
    Main Street Medina, in partnership with the City of Medina, will host our first cleanup day in the South Town District, roughly bordered by Smith, Broadway, Lafayette, and Huntington. Snacks, trash bags, gloves and vests will be provided. Please bring rakes, brooms, and shovels, and a personal reusable water bottle.

    Visit downtown Ravenna for amazing art, as well as area food trucks and wine.

    Bring the whole family to enjoy a taste of Tiffin and Seneca County! Attendees can purchase $1 tickets that can be redeemed for a slice of pizza from any vendor, snacks, soda, or water. African American Civil Rights Movement in Ohio Webinar

Wednesday, June 12th – 1:00 pm-2:00 pm

Expand your knowledge about the African American Civil Rights Movement in Ohio and learn about documenting the connection between people and events defining the movement and significant places where its history happened. Barbara Powers with the State Historic Preservation Office will share information about their project to project to research, document, and assist in the preservation of historic properties associated with African American history and the Civil Rights Movement in Ohio during the 20th century. The webinar will present important themes, individuals and organizations defining the Civil Rights Movement as well as buildings and sites associated with the history of the movement. Participants will learn how to get started nominating historic properties associated with the Civil Rights Movement to the National Register of Historic Places.

Barbara Powers, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for Inventory and Registration for the State Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio History Connection, has 37 years of experience with historic survey and the National Register of Historic Places programs in Ohio. Powers serves on the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center Commission. She was the state coordinator for the Society of Architectural Historians online publication Archipedia Classic Buildings. Published works include “Ohio’s Pride, the Art and Architecture of the Ohio State Office Building” in Timeline, a publication of the Ohio History Connection; “Louis Bromfield’s Big House at Malabar Farm: Form Follows Fiction” in Recreating the American Past, Essays on the Colonial Revival published by the University of Virginia Press and “The Architecture of the Ohio Governor’s Residence” in Our First Family’s Home published by Ohio University Press. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Miami University and a Master’s in Architectural History with a certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Virginia.

  • Heritage Ohio Preservation Month Photo Contest

    Preservation Month is nearly here and 2019 marks the 10th year of our Preservation Month Photo Contest. This year’s theme is Urban Renewal, but with a twist. While Urban Renewal may have once consisted of demoing whole blocks of city buildings, without any care or thought about the people in the buildings, let alone the character of the buildings, Urban Renewal today means the revitalization of cities, its people, and its heritage.

    So, here’s your contest assignment: take a picture that captures your community’s best Urban Renewal efforts, whether an event image in a revitalized business district, a historic building once slated for demo that’s been saved and rehabbed, or even the underutilized block of buildings that will, once restored, again contribute to the renewal of the neighborhood. Entries are due by May 10th.

  • Take a Hike – Cleveland

    Take a Hike offers six (FREE!) guided walking tours of distinct neighborhoods in downtown Cleveland! Weekly tours explore the Gateway District, University Circle, Warehouse District, Civic Center, Playhouse Square neighborhood and Canal Basin Park in the Flats. Each tour lasts approximately one and a half hours in length, and features actors and actresses portraying historic figures from Cleveland’s past. Check the website for the full schedule of tours.

  • South Town Cruise-In – Medina
    Join Main Street Medina for a weekly cruise-in in Medina’s South Town, Tuesday evenings, May 21-September 24th from 4-8pm at 233 Lafayette Rd (the former Hawkins Market parking lot, soon to be the new home of Medina County Habitat for Humanity). See some of the best classic, collectible, rat rod, hot rod, and muscle cars in Northeast Ohio, and enjoy classic tunes from the 1950-70’s with DJ Bruce. The South Town Cruise-In is free and open to the public.

  • First Friday: Putter Around Downtown – Delaware
    Enjoy a miniature putt-putt course around the downtown businesses! For a fee of $5 per person, your family can go on a putt-putt adventure around our downtown businesses! Completed scorecards may be returned to the tent to be entered into a drawing to win a prize. Putters and balls will be provided.
  • First Friday: Art Walk – Kent

    May’s First Friday is Garden Party, featuring a return of the Marietta Derby! While the horses are racing in Kentucky, downtown will welcome races of our very own and encourage shoppers to don their biggest and boldest hats as they shop and dine downtown.

    Grab your friends and head to historic Medina for an evening of socializing, dining, shopping, dancing, laughing, and merriment.
  • First Friday: Art Around Town – Middletown
    Join Downtown Middletown for an artist walk celebrating visual art, performing art and culinary art! There will be art in businesses, art on the streets, music in the air, and fun performances on stage! Bring the whole family and admire the incredible talent we have right here in Middletown! Art vendors will be set up along Central Avenue for one of a kind shopping and artists will be showcasing their skills with demonstrations, workshops and tutorials inside downtown businesses. Businesses will be open late just for you! Check in at Governor’s Square (corner of Central and Broad) to get your “Art Around Town Passport Palette” to guide you around town. Visit businesses to be entered to win FREE workshops, classes and gift certificates for local artists, performers and more!
  • Annual Chocolate Walk & Wine Event/Ladies Night Out – PainesvilleChocolate
    Stroll throughout historic downtown Painesville to sample tasty chocolates at participating merchants. Wine provided by Virant, Grand River Cellars, and Debonee will be sold on Main Street. Entertainment will be provided by Levi Lynn near the corner of Main and State Street.
  • First Friday: May Memories – Tipp City
    Explore the hidden places and spaces of historic downtown Tipp City buildings! Step back in time and enjoy an inside look and a FUN history lesson of Tipp City.
  • First Friday: Downtown Game Night – Wadsworth
    Enjoy playing a variety of fun games downtown provided by downtown Wadsworth brick-and-mortar merchants and organizations!

  • Jane’s Walk – Kent
    Using the history and stories gathered for his new book Small Town, Big Music, author Jason Prufer will provide a tour of locations in Kent significant to the history of Rock and Roll! Come learn and reminisce about Kent’s Rock and Roll past and hear one-of-a-kind commentary and insight from Jason. Attendees will meet at Hometown Bank Plaza and the walking tour will leave promptly at 12 pm.
  • RiverCon – Middletown
    Come experience where Star Wars and the Great Miami River meet. At this new event, guests will have the chance to participate in a Star Wars costume contest, a 5-mile Star Wars costume bike ride or 5K costume walk on the Great Miami River Trail (pre-registration required). But, that’s not all! Train like a Jedi with a variety of fitness activities and learn how to stay safe with water-related demonstrations.

  • 21st Annual Gazebo Garden Walk – Wellington
    The 21st Annual Gazebo Garden Walk is Wellington’s way to officially welcome spring!  There will be over 60 vendors outside and inside of the Town Hall, and next door in the Fire Station with handmade crafts, art, photography, jewelry, clothing, home decor, quilts, purses, garden art, flowers, plants, edible treats, kettle korn, upcycled items, antiques, and more. Lunch will be served in the Town Hall between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Come out an visit with friends and neighbors while shopping for spring and summer items. It’s also the day before Mother’s Day and a great place to find your favorite Mom’s a gift!

  • Kent Craft Beer Fest – Kent
    Kent’s first Craft Beer Festival in downtown Kent. The fest will run from 1pm to 7pm for VIP ticket holders and from 2pm to 7pm for General Admission ticket holders. During the festival, attendees will get to sample craft beers from some of Northeast Ohio’s Best Breweries.   • Hidden Places Secret Spaces – Marietta
    For one afternoon we have special permission to visit areas of historic buildings that are normally off-limits in Marietta! Travel at your own pace and visit the stops in whatever order you like.
